Life can hit us hard. We lose our best friend in a sudden accident. We learn that our child may have been abused by a trusted family member. Our partner decides they no longer love us and walk out of a relationship we thought would last a lifetime. These are some just some real examples of the hard realities of life.
We can’t change our histories or our stories, but we can take charge of the meaning we put to the experiences, and we can manage our reaction to these the things that have affected us, and how we live out our lives because of them. In doing so, we take authorship of our stories and we become triumphant heroines of our stories. By becoming heroines and authors, we are essentially saying that no matter what happens to us throughout our life, we are not going to let circumstances change who we are at our core, we will not become stuck in a story, a period in time in our history.
When I started working with women, I came from a background of abuse. As a child, I had been sexually abused repeatedly. It took me some time to get past this story and the narrative I told myself about my abuse. Then I got married and endured a new type of abuse, physical, emotional and financial abuse. I fell deep in despair, loneliness, and could not see my way up and out. Something about being abused by the person who vowed to loved to love, respect, honor, and care for you does something to a woman. It shatters your world and the way you see yourself. After the last beating from my now ex-husband left me in the surgical ward of the hospital, I knew my life had to take a new turn.
I prayed, meditated, took up running, and I tried many other things to find the healing I needed. But it was through journaling and therapeutic writing that I was able to reclaim my power, my sense of self, and find healing and way to wholeness. Since then, I’ve become a student and an advocate of the transformative and cathartic power of writing and I’ve made it my mission to help other women write new stories for their lives, and lead lives that honor them and fill them with a sense of purpose.
My main areas of focus when working with women are, therapeutic writing, authentic living, and minimalism, fostering creativity in the midst of busyness, and honoring the sacred within them.
